Open Plan Office
An open plan office is a workspace where the majority of employees work in a shared, undivided floor area without permanent private offices or full-height partitions. It emerged as a way to increase communication and reduce cost, and remains the dominant layout in Indian corporate offices.
Open plan creates genuine problems when not properly designed: noise from adjacent calls or conversations is the most consistently cited workplace complaint in occupancy surveys. The solution is not to add full-height partitions but to layer the open plan with acoustic treatment (ceiling tiles with NRC 0.85+, soft furnishings, screen panels), distributed phone booths and focus rooms, and zoning that separates loud collaborative areas from quiet concentration zones. A well-designed open plan floor is a calibrated mix of settings, not simply a room full of desks.
