Vastu Shastra (in commercial design)
Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian system of spatial and architectural arrangement based on directional alignment, elemental balance, and energy flow. In commercial office design, Vastu principles guide placement of entrances, reception desks, management cabins, cash counters, and utilities relative to compass directions and the building's central energy axis (Brahmasthan).
In Indian corporate fit-outs, Vastu compliance is commonly requested by promoter-led businesses, family-owned enterprises, and Indian-headquartered firms, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, real estate, and financial services. Practical Vastu considerations in office planning include: main entrance facing north or east, no beam directly over workstations or the chairman's desk, kitchen and pantry in the southeast, and toilets not adjacent to the main entrance. A design-build firm experienced in Indian corporate projects will have a process for accommodating Vastu requirements without compromising functional space planning.
