Floating Floor
A floating floor is a floor system that is mechanically isolated from the structural slab, using resilient pads, springs, or a floating concrete screed. The isolation prevents impact noise and vibration from transmitting between floors — critical in multi-tenanted buildings and in boardrooms, studios, or healthcare facilities where acoustic separation is mandatory.
In Indian office fit-outs, floating floors are specified in specific conditions: boardrooms and private offices requiring acoustic privacy ratings of Rw 50+ dB, server rooms or labs with vibration-sensitive equipment, and any space above a music venue, car park, or heavy plant room. They add 15–25 mm to floor build-up height and are more expensive than a bonded screed, but they are the only reliable solution when acoustic compliance is non-negotiable.
