Glazing Ratio

Glazing ratio (or window-to-wall ratio, WWR) is the proportion of a building's facade that is glazed. A higher glazing ratio increases natural light penetration and views but also increases solar heat gain — a significant energy load in India's tropical climate. ECBC sets maximum WWR limits by climate zone; most of India falls in zones requiring WWR below 40% for typical office facades.

In a fit-out context, the glazing ratio is fixed by the base building, but the fit-out team must plan around it. High WWR facades on the west elevation in Pune require solar control film, external shading, or deep-plan workstations set back from the glass to avoid glare. Always check orientation and WWR in the base building specification before finalising a space plan.
