Chilled Beam

A chilled beam is a ceiling-mounted HVAC device that cools air through convection (passive chilled beams) or uses induced airflow over a cooling coil (active chilled beams). They eliminate ducted air supply to the occupied zone, resulting in quieter operation, lower ceiling-void depth requirements, and better energy performance at part-load conditions.

Chilled beams have been adopted in premium commercial offices in India — particularly in buildings targeting LEED Platinum or WELL — but require careful humidity management. In Mumbai's coastal climate, the dewpoint of ambient air can exceed beam surface temperature, causing condensation unless fresh air is adequately pre-conditioned. They are better suited to Pune's drier inland climate. An MEP engineer experienced with tropical climates should always validate the psychrometric design before specification.
