Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the condition of the air within an office as it relates to the health and comfort of occupants. Key parameters are CO₂ concentration (an indicator of ventilation adequacy), levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from furniture and paints, fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), temperature, relative humidity, and formaldehyde from panel products.
In Indian cities, where outdoor PM2.5 frequently exceeds WHO guidelines, the quality of HVAC filtration is particularly important. WELL Building Standard requires minimum MERV 13 filtration and continuous CO₂ monitoring at occupied zones. Low-VOC paint, formaldehyde-free board products, and NAUF certification for joinery materials are the primary specification levers a fit-out team controls. Poor IAQ is consistently correlated with lower productivity and higher absenteeism in workplace research.
