Embodied Carbon

Embodied carbon is the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with extracting, manufacturing, transporting, installing, and eventually disposing of building materials — everything except the energy used to operate the building once occupied. In a commercial fit-out, the highest embodied carbon contributors are typically steel, aluminium, and concrete.

As Indian corporates face increasing ESG disclosure requirements, embodied carbon is becoming a procurement consideration. Specifying lower-carbon alternatives — FSC-certified timber over MDF, recycled-content carpet tiles, reclaimed stone rather than quarried — can meaningfully reduce a project's carbon footprint. Whole-life carbon assessments are now included in LEED v4.1, WELL v2, and IGBC Green Interiors credits.
