Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE)

A Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) is a structured assessment of how a building performs in actual use, typically conducted 6–12 months after occupation. It gathers quantitative data (energy consumption, temperature logs, occupancy sensor utilisation rates) and qualitative feedback (staff surveys, focus groups) to evaluate whether the design is delivering against the original workplace strategy brief.

POEs are increasingly included as a standard deliverable in well-managed fit-out projects and are required for WELL Building Standard recertification. In Indian practice, POE findings typically reveal gaps in acoustic performance, inadequate meeting room provision or under-use of focus rooms, and HVAC zoning mismatches — all issues correctable through minor reconfiguration rather than full refurbishment.
