VRF / VRV (Variable Refrigerant Flow/Volume)
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) and VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume, Daikin's proprietary name for the same technology) are air conditioning systems that connect a single outdoor condensing unit to multiple indoor fan coil units via refrigerant pipework, with the system modulating refrigerant flow to match each zone's cooling demand in real time.
In Indian office fit-outs, VRF/VRV is typically specified for: warm shell spaces where no central chilled water plant exists, smaller offices (500–3,000 sq ft), and fit-outs in buildings with existing VRF infrastructure. Advantages include individual zone control, no cooling tower requirement, and relatively straightforward installation. Limitations include high refrigerant pipe lengths, maintenance complexity with multiple indoor units, and less effective fresh air delivery versus a central AHU system. Always coordinate the refrigerant pipe routing with ceiling and partition layouts early.
